Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. Genesis 1:3-5 NASB
God was moving over the darkness that was void and without form when He spoke: “Let there be light” and light appeared which God separated from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” Then one of the most profound statements is recorded: And evening passed and morning came, it marked the first day.
In reality, we begin a new day each time the evening sun is setting in the western sky. God desires to turn our eyes from the beauty of the creation for us to see, from both natural and spiritual darkness, a much greater picture, vision and knowledge of Him, who created us in our mother’s womb and brought us from darkness into the light of day.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night,” Even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You. For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:11-14 NASB
Truly, it is an evening and a morning, a time for new energy to come forth in the power of His might to accomplish His will for our life during the light of day (John 9:4). Evening to morning is a time of reflection, renewal and restoration.
As we prayerfully begin each new day of life, as the evening shadows of natural light fade into darkness, it is time to reflect upon God, give thanks and obtain rest in Him and allow refreshing by the Holy Spirit – spiritually, physically and mentally – for the journey of another day which will continue until the sun begins again to slowly fade in the western landscape.
During the evening hours, our natural mind calls the rising of the sun in the eastern skies “tomorrow.” Tomorrow never comes. Life is always about living for Jesus Christ today – from evening through morning!
As the shadows of the evening fade into darkness, let our prayer to God be: “Let the Spirit renew my spirit, soul and mind so I may please You
