My heart is confident in you, O God; my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises! Wake up, my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. For your unfailing love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth. Psalm 57:7-11 NLT
I am living in the Book of Psalms. My journey is slow and my heart is being enlarged by the heart of David. Friend, if these verses don’t make you want to shout with joy – you are spiritually dead!
Wake up, my heart! My heart is confident in You, Oh God! What a powerful testimony from King David, written regarding the time he fled from Saul and went into the cave.
David verbally calls out to his soul and his instruments to prepare for praise. Wake up, my heart! He calls for his instruments to become alive because he wants to “wake the dawn” with his heart praising and honoring God’s faithfulness to him. Instead of spending the hours of the night worrying about what he cannot change, he uses the sleepless hours meditating on the goodness of God and preparing to worship.
This example of David reveals to us how to turn times of stress, defeat, sorry and loss into times of blessing by reflecting and mediating on God’s faithfulness in comparison with our momentary problems in our journey of life.
If we go back and look at the first few verses of Psalm 57 (verses 1-3), we read of David begging for God’s mercy and protection. He shares where he is going to hide – beneath the shadow of God’s wings – not under God’s wings, but the shadow of God’s wings. Think about the protection of a shadow or the shade of a tree from the heat of the day. God’s protection is far greater than we can realize.
Weary and worn, David declares God will fulfill His purpose for him. He asserts that God will send help from heaven to rescue him and that those who pursued him would be disgraced. “My God will send forth His unfailing love and faithfulness.”
David repeats the exaltation of God and requests for His glory to shine over all the earth. “Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth.” Psalm 57:5 and 11
