THE OLD TESTAMENT STILL MATTERS! Study Deuteronomy 28 to Discern What is Happening in Our World Today – Part 2

As I discussed last time, Deuteronomy 28 should be read, re-read, and studied in order to understand what is happening in our nation and world today. Unfortunately, too many of the professing Christians today are ashamed of their Lord. SOME “put in their time” — an hour a week – but then, having done their compulsory “duty,” return again to their carnal lifestyles, as a dog returns to its vomit. Today, Christians fear to speak the Lord’s name in front of friends, family or co-workers for fear of being ridiculed. And while almost every household has multiple copies of God’s Holy Word, few are ever opened. We no longer even know what it says, though we have our favorite politically-correct verses, like “Judge Not.” In addition, many of those charged with shepherding the flock are so cowardly, they refuse to preach the whole counsel of God, for fear of offending some in the congregation and so they preach flattering platitudes; non-offensive “pablum,” practicing a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof; and thereby, denying the sheep any…

THE OLD TESTAMENT STILL MATTERS! Study Deuteronomy 28 to Discern What is Happening in Our World Today – Part 1

To dip into Scripture once again, let’s take a look in Deuteronomy. As you know the Pilgrims and Puritans, then later, our Founding Fathers established our country as a Christian nation. In doing so, they entered into a covenant relationship as the Israelites did and set forth in Deuteronomy 28. I will elaborate on this concept in future postings, but let’s start here with some particular, pointed verses from this chapter, and I think you will see what I mean. I won’t recite the entire chapter; you can read that for yourself, but let me just highlight some of the portions that I believe will strike a chord with you. See if you recognize our own nation in these ancient words of warning from Moses: Deuteronomy 28:1-14: And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all His commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all…

THE OLD TESTAMENT STILL MATTERS! Part 3 WARNINGS FROM SCRIPTURE Pastor Ladena Bough, Stockton MO

At the Independence Church we don’t do sermons on Sunday mornings, we simply study the Word of God. We also get into some very heavy discussions about Scripture and how it is impacting the world around us today. That is really what started me on this journey to get others looking at the warnings, etc., that are contained in the Old Testament. That being said, this week we will take a look at what is going on in our world today and the warnings found in Ezra. You have probably heard of the “Babylonian Exile” wherein the Jewish people were taken prisoner by Babylon and forced to leave the Kingdom of Judah as captives. After that Babylon fell to the Persians and King Cyrus the Great in 538/539 B.C. permitted and directed the Judeans to return to Judah and rebuild their temple. This was nothing unusual for the Persians since one of the notable features of the Persian empire was its integration of the people they conquered into a single administrative system while maintaining, at the same time,…

THE OLD TESTAMENT STILL MATTERS! Part 2 Pastor Ladena Bough Stockton MO

As stated in Part 1 of my series, I am heartbroken at the apostacy I see in some of the “churches” today.  2 Timothy 3:16-17, says: 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Consequently, when a church denies the inerrancy of the Bible it is a serious matter and leads to all kinds of problems.  Denying the truth of Genesis denies the historical fall of Adam.  Other doctrinal issues include the denial of the facts of the experiences of the Prophet Jonah; it may explain away some of the miracles of both the Old and New Testament; and any of a number of other issues and lifestyle errors.  The inerrancy of the Bible is an important doctrine and the denial or diluting of such could very well lead to a number of doctrinal and life errors. So, let’s pick up where we left off previously by continuing in our discussion…
